Our Approach: Mind, Body, and Soul
Shade Tree Counseling was built on a simple but demanding conviction: people are whole beings, and healing has to address the whole person.
We are a Christian counseling practice in Houston, Texas. We believe the Bible is true, that God's design for human life is good, and that psychology, physiology, and theology are not competing frameworks — they are complementary tools for helping people live well.
What Is Integrated Christian Counseling?
Integrated Christian counseling is not simply quoting Scripture at someone who is struggling. It is not praying instead of addressing real psychological needs. It is the conviction that a human being has a mind, a body, and a soul — and that lasting healing requires attending to all three.
At Shade Tree, integration means three things working together in every counseling relationship:
1. The Mind: Psychology and Renewing Your Thinking
Our primary counseling modality is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). We chose CBT deliberately — not because it is trendy, but because we believe it is the most practically aligned with the biblical concept of renewing the mind. Romans 12:2 calls us to be "transformed by the renewing of your mind." CBT is essentially a structured, evidence-based practice of doing exactly that.
We believe the mind can misperceive reality because of the fall, because of insecurity, and because of painful life circumstances. Scripture alone tells us what is ultimately true. CBT gives us practical frameworks for bringing our thinking into alignment with that truth. Together, they are extraordinarily powerful.
We do not believe in simply "following your truth." We believe there is an ultimate truth — God's truth — and that people thrive when their thinking aligns with Scripture. Psychology is a tool we use to help people answer the practical question: "How do I actually stop being anxious?" rather than stopping at "cast your cares upon Him" without giving people the skills to do that.
2. The Body: Physical Health Is Mental Health
This is one of the most underaddressed dimensions of counseling, and one of Shade Tree's most important differentiators. We believe many mental health struggles are at least partly metabolic and lifestyle-related — not purely neurochemical or psychological.
Lack of movement, poor nutrition, being overweight, sleep deprivation, and addiction all damage the body — and a damaged body affects the mind and the soul. We talk with clients directly about what they are eating, whether they are moving, how they are sleeping, and what physical habits are working against them. We believe the body is part of God's good creation, that it matters to Him, and that stewarding it well is not vanity — it is faithfulness.
We also address addiction and harmful physical habits as threats to the whole person — not just moral failures, but patterns that physically damage the brain and body and make emotional and spiritual growth harder.
3. The Soul: Spiritual Formation and Community
The soul is the dimension most counseling ignores. At Shade Tree, it is central. We talk with clients about their relationship with God — about rest, prayer, Scripture, and the spiritual disciplines that shape a person from the inside out. We also talk about community, because we believe people were designed to thrive in it.
Ideally, that community is a church — a spiritual community that guides, challenges, encourages, and holds people accountable. But at minimum, everyone needs a healthy community around them. Isolation is not neutral. It is a condition that makes almost every struggle worse. Part of our work is helping clients build and sustain the relationships and communities that support their thriving.
Our Goal: From Zero to Thriving
The standard mental health model is built around the diagnostic framework. You arrive in crisis — say, at a -10. The goal is to get you to zero. To baseline. To functional. To "not actively suffering." That is a worthy goal. But it is not our only goal, and we do not believe it should be yours.
We believe zero is a starting line, not a finish line.
"We want to take you from zero to positive ten — from managing symptoms to genuinely thriving in purpose, maturity, relationships, and faith."
That means we work in phases. The first phase — typically around eight weeks — focuses on your presenting issue: anxiety, depression, addiction, trauma, marriage crisis, or whatever brought you in. For most common presenting issues, meaningful progress is possible in that window if you engage the process. Many clients move from -10 to around -2 in eight weeks.
After that initial phase, we do not simply discharge you. We walk with you into what comes next. Some clients move to monthly maintenance sessions — accountability, growth, and the ongoing work of living well. Others continue more frequently because they want the kind of deep, ongoing support that functions more like personal coaching, executive coaching, or spiritual direction. We help with things that are not always mental health diagnoses: job issues, parenting, anger, patience, leadership development, soft skills, faith growth, and learning to lean into your gifts and purpose.
We also believe most people are not designed to sustain change entirely alone. Accountability, challenge, and support are not signs of weakness — they are signs of self-awareness. Long-term counseling and coaching at Shade Tree is not dependency. It is wisdom.
What We Believe
We believe in being clear about our convictions — not as a way of excluding people, but as a form of respect. When you come to Shade Tree, you deserve to know exactly where we stand.
On Marriage and Family
We believe marriage is a sacred covenant between one man and one woman, and that it is worth fighting for. We will do everything in our power to help a marriage heal rather than encourage divorce. We believe the family is the foundation of a flourishing society and that the traditional family structure reflects God's design for human thriving. Once again I know this is scary but it is true and God's truth so therefore it is good.
On Human Identity and Sexuality
We believe God created human beings male and female, and that there is a biblical order to sexuality that supports human thriving. We hold this conviction not as a political position but as a conviction rooted in Scripture and in our care for the people we serve.
We want people who are struggling with sexuality and identity to come to Shade Tree and feel genuinely understood and welcomed — not shamed. Our approach is to walk with people in their struggles with compassion, without condemnation, while helping them align their lives with the values they themselves say they hold. Some people may have to walk with certain struggles for a long time. We are willing to walk with them — honestly and faithfully
On Psychology and Faith
We believe God gave us wisdom in Scripture and He gave us science. We take both seriously.
Psychology, when understood rightly, is not a rival to biblical truth. It is a practical instrument in service of it — helping people do the hard work that Scripture calls them to do. Biblical wisdom is not a veneer applied over standard therapy. It is the foundation. The two belong in the same room — with wisdom leading and psychology serving.
That is what we are built around.
