Integrated Christian Counseling in Houston

You don't have to choose between your faith and your mental health. At Shade Tree, they work together.

Integrated Christian counseling at Shade Tree is built on a simple but serious conviction: you are a whole person — mind, body, and soul — and lasting healing requires attending to all three.

Scripture is our foundation. It gives us the truest account of human nature — who we are, how we are broken, and what we were made for. Evidence-based psychological practice, primarily CBT, gives us practical tools for doing the hard work of getting there. The two do not compete. Scripture leads. Psychology serves. And together they are capable of something neither produces alone.

We are not a practice that uses Christian language as decoration. We are not a practice that treats psychology as a threat to faith. We are a practice that takes both seriously — because we believe you deserve nothing less.

What sets Integrated Christian Counseling apart?

Two approaches dominate the landscape. Secular therapy that acknowledges faith and then sets it aside. And pastoral care that leans on Scripture and prayer but stops short of engaging real psychological tools. We believe people deserve both — and that is what we are built around.

Integrated Christian counseling at Shade Tree is a third path — and the distinction matters.

Scripture is the foundation. Not a reference point. Not a decorative frame around otherwise standard therapy. The authoritative account of human nature — our design, our brokenness, and what genuine healing actually looks like. Everything else is built on that.

CBT is our primary clinical framework because we believe what Romans 12:2 describes — the renewal of the mind — is not just a command. It is something people need practical, evidence-based tools to do. Decades of research confirm what Scripture established long before the research existed.

We attend to physical health because the body is a temple worth stewarding — and because the research is unambiguous that physical and mental health are deeply connected.

We attend to the soul because leaving spiritual formation out of the counseling room means leaving the deepest part of a person untouched. We are not willing to do that.

That is what sets integrated Christian counseling apart. Not therapy with Christian aesthetics. The whole person — mind, body, and soul — is addressed with the full weight of Scripture and the best tools the field has to offer.
