Sports Mental Performance Coaching
Your Body Is Ready. Is Your Mind?
You've put in the reps. You've logged the miles. You've shown up every day when no one was watching.
But when the lights come on, something shifts.
Maybe it's the overthinking before a big game. The slump you can't shake no matter how hard you train. The fear of failing in front of the people who believe in you. The voice in your head that gets louder the more the moment matters.
Physical preparation got you here. Mental performance is what takes you further.
The Mental Game Is Still the Game
At Shade Tree Counseling Center, we work with athletes at every level — from weekend warriors and youth competitors to collegiate athletes and seasoned professionals — who understand that peak performance is never just physical.
The same edge that separates good from elite in the boardroom exists on the field, on the court, and in the water. Our sports mental performance coaching is built for athletes who are serious about closing the gap between what they're capable of and what they're actually producing.
This is not therapy. It is not soft. It is disciplined, focused work on the most undertrained muscle in your game.
What We Help You Build
Pre-Competition Readiness
Develop a consistent mental routine so you arrive locked in, not anxious and scattered.
Focus Under Pressure
Train your attention so distractions and high-stakes moments don't derail your execution.
Confidence That Doesn't Depend on Recent Results
Build the kind of identity-rooted belief that performs on Tuesday the same as it does on championship Saturday.
Resilience After Setbacks
Process injuries, slumps, benching, and failure in ways that strengthen you rather than sideline you mentally.
Visualization and Mental Rehearsal
Use research-backed techniques to prepare your brain for performance before you ever step into competition.
Competitive Anxiety Management
Learn to harness the energy that anxiety produces rather than letting it tighten your mechanics and cloud your decisions.
Identity Beyond the Sport
Know who you are when the season ends or the career changes, so your value never depends on a stat line.
For Amateur and Professional Athletes
Whether you compete for love of the game or for a living, the mental performance challenges you face are real.
For the amateur athlete, it might be the 5K you've trained months for that ends in a panic at mile one. It might be the weekend league that feels like pressure you can't explain. It might be the youth athlete in your house who is physically gifted but mentally fragile when it counts.
For the professional athlete, the margin is razor thin. Everyone at your level is physically prepared. The separator is mental. Consistency. Composure. The ability to reset between plays, between sets, between at-bats. We work with professionals who want that edge without apology.
Both matter here. Both get the same quality of work.
Faith Has Something to Say About This
Shade Tree is an integrated practice. That means if your faith is part of who you are as an athlete, we bring that into the work.
Scripture has always addressed identity, pressure, courage, and perseverance with remarkable clarity. Athletes who compete from a place of grounded identity in Christ perform differently than those whose confidence is entirely dependent on circumstance.
That integration is available to every athlete we work with. It is never imposed. It is always an option.
What This Is Not
Sports mental performance coaching is not counseling for mental illness. If what you are carrying is clinical — anxiety disorder, depression, trauma, or a mental health diagnosis — we have licensed clinicians at Shade Tree equipped for that work.
This is performance coaching. It is goal-focused, skill-building work designed to help healthy athletes perform at a higher level. If you are unsure which you need, we will help you figure that out in your first consultation.
Who We Work With
We serve athletes competing in any sport, at any level, including high school, collegiate, professional, and masters level competitors. We also work with coaches and teams looking to build a culture of mental performance into their programs.
Sessions are available in office, virtually, or walking — because some athletes think better when they are moving.
Ready to Train the Mental Game?
You did not come this far by avoiding hard work. This is just a different kind of hard work.
One conversation is all it takes to find out if this is the right fit.

Most of what holds people back from counseling is the belief that needing help is weakness. We disagree. Seeking help — honestly, intentionally — is one of the most disciplined things you can do. We offer a free 30-minute consultation so you can decide if Shade Tree is the right fit before you commit to anything.
